Most pork is raised on slatted floors over manure pits. We chose a different system: hoop barns with deep bedding, winter rye in the field rotation, and composted bedding returned to the ground. It builds soil, keeps nutrients out of the watershed, and gives our farmers a better margin than a contract grower deal.
